Abstract

This study aims to describe the comparison of the use of the SQ4R learning method and the SIRE learning
method on the skills of studying the structure and language of news texts. This type of research is
quantitative with experimental methods in the form of Posttest – Only – Control Design. The sample of
this research is class VIII SMPN 23 Padang. First, the skills of studying the structure and language of
news texts using the SQ4R learning method for class VIII students of SMPN 23 Padang are 87.70 with
Very Good (BS) qualifications. Second, the skills of studying the structure and language of news texts
using the SIRE learning method for class VIII SMPN 33 Padang students are 76.77 with good
qualifications (B). Third, there is a significant difference in the use of the SQ4R method and the SIRE
learning method on the skills of studying the structure and language of news texts. If viewed from the
table at the 95% (0.05) significant level is 10.93. This means that the value of tcount is greater than
ttable. Thus, H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted. So, it can be said that the use of the SQ4R learning
method is better than the use of the SIRE learning method in studying the structure and language of news
texts for class VIII SMPN 23 Padang students.
