About the Journal
Biodiversity and Traditional Knowledge (abbreviated as Biodiversity) is a peer-reviewed, open-access, international scientific journal dedicated to bridging modern biological sciences with the ancestral wisdom of indigenous and local communities worldwide. The journal publishes high-quality original research articles, reviews, and short communications that explore the reciprocal relationships between humans, cultural traditions, and the conservation of global ecosystems.
Aims and Scope
The journal encourages manuscripts that address the diversity of plants, animals, and microorganisms at the genetic, species, and ecosystem levels, specifically how they are integrated with Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and localized cultural practices.
The scope of the journal encompasses, but is not limited to, the following interdisciplinary fields:
- Ethnobiology & Ethnosciences: Multi-dimensional interactions between human societies and their surrounding flora (Ethnobotany), fauna (Ethnozoology), and micro-ecosystems.
- Ethnomedicine & Ethnopharmacology: Documentation and validation of traditional bio-resources for healthcare, including phytochemical screening, bioactive compound characterization, and traditional herbal formulations.
- Agro-biodiversity & Food Security: Traditional agricultural practices, management of landraces/local crop varieties, homegardens, and indigenous agroforestry systems driving climate resilience.
- Community-Based Conservation: Customary resource management, sacred groves, customary environmental laws, and ecosystem restoration led by indigenous stewardship.
- Legal, Ethical & Policy Perspectives: Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) protecting traditional knowledge, prevention of biopiracy, and the implementation of the Nagoya Protocol regarding Access and Benefit-Sharing (ABS).
